As the weather continues to warm and we draw closer to the summer months, we also draw closer to vacation season. While some Americans enjoy saving money with stay-cations (not leaving their home town), others will travel within the US or abroad. Regardless of your vacation decision, be sure to follow these five tips as you plan:

  1. Don’t use your credit card unless you can pay it off the following month.
  2. Keep a healthy emergency fund of at least three months of expenses. Emergency funds are for emergencies!
  3. Write down all the items you have in your wallet or purse in case it is stolen.
  4. Set a spending budget for the trip. It’s easy to swipe, swipe, swipe, but don’t suffer from a debt hangover.
  5. Check with your credit card provider first before traveling outside the US. This will help them know you’re traveling, but also find out if extra charges apply for international use.

Vacations are fun and the relaxed feeling when you return should last as long as possible. Don’t let that feeling be overshadowed by vacationers remorse from over-spending. Have fun!
